Having a Boyfriend Is It a Sin in Christianity? The Bible was written in Roman times and reflects the spirit of this time and society. An example is that in the Bible women are described as inferior to men. They are not even considered owners of their own bodies. According to the Bible, a woman belongs to her husband (which is very similar to Roman law).

Before a woman was married, the responsibility for her fell into the hands of her father. The girl’s only purpose in life before marriage was to get married (still the norm in some not-so-well-to-do rural African communities). At that point, she had to take care of the housework and deliver the baby. Before she got married, it was her duty to study and prepare for these tasks. But now, things have changed. A woman has a choice of having a boyfriend of her own liking before she eventually gets married. So, is it a sin to have a boyfriend then? God is the creator of the marriage idea, and having a boyfriend is a step towards that marriage union.

But what God disapproves of is having wrong motives. Do you want to have a boyfriend just for the sake of it? Or just for fun and experience? Is your marriage to him your ultimate goal? Are you planning premarital sex or any type of activity that is not approved by God in the Bible?

Having a Boyfriend Is It a Sin in Christianity? , however, it can be a foundation for sin. Imagine having a boyfriend at the age of 15-years-old, what would be the purpose of that relationship with him? Consider the words in the book of 1 Corinthians 6:9-10:

“Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: no sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, or swindlers will inherit God’s kingdom.

Therefore, the motive for getting a boyfriend should not be for romance purposes which would definitely be a brooding ground for sinning which would lead to eternal condemnation when Jesus Christ shall come back for the second time.

Although the Bible is silent on the issue of dating, most Christian communities today acknowledge and some especially in the west, even encourage their daughters to have boyfriends with emphasis

placed on purpose for getting one – marriage.

The purpose for getting a boyfriend therefore should have the possibility of marriage. Dating is not just about playing around and having fun. It is really just a waste of time you could waste looking for a partner. If you have to date, make sure you pick the right people. So, try not to spend time meeting people you know you will not be spending the rest of your life with. The real purpose of this meeting is mainly to see if you are suitable to spend your life together.

However, as a Christian, you have to treat your boyfriend in a certain way. First, he can be someone else’s husband, not yours, so do not treat him like yours. The golden rule applies here: Do you want someone to take advantage of your man just because they have met him before you? Treat your boyfriend the same way you would want the girlfriend of your future husband to treat him.

Having a Boyfriend Is It a Sin in Christianity? ? The danger of having a boyfriend is the temptation to begin doing things that are only permitted to be done by married people – sex. Therefore, if you may, resist such relationships as admonished by the Bible in the book of 2 Timothy 2:22 which says: “Flee from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

Conclusion

The Bible does not say anything about a girl having a boyfriend, some Christian communities acknowledge and encourage it. However, there is a need to be careful so as not to start indulging in illicit activities which God prohibits.
