Before Jesus’s ministry, he studied several activities that prepared him for his future ministry. One such activity was with teachers of the law in the temple when he was a 12-year-old boy. The whole story is in the book of Luke 2:41-52. Pay particular interest is in verse 49 where Jesus answered his parents. They asked him why he did not travel back home with them but opted to remain in Jerusalem. They had been looking for him for three days, here is his response “Why were you searching for Me?” He asked them. “Didn’t you know that I had to be in my Father’s house?”

He was getting ready for his ministry nearly two decades later. He dove into ministry by listening to the teachings as well as asking teachers questions. Because of this, he was a marvel to those around him. Jesus impressed them with how he understood things and how he had answers to every question. Verse 52 of the book of Luke 2 says that “Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.” (HCSB)

It seemed “ordinary” to introduce Jewish boys to Jewish Temple leaders at the age of twelve. This marked the transition from childhood to adulthood. For Jewish boys, this occurs at age twelve, but for some Orthodox and Conservative communities at age thirteen.

However, Jesus in spite of telling his parents that he needed to be in his father’s house, still obeyed his earthly parents as opposed to remaining in the city of Jerusalem.

His occupation

Before beginning his ministry, Jesus was a carpenter as this was his earthly father’s line of work. This is in the New Testament book of Mark which says:

“When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom given to Him, and how are these miracles performed by His hands? Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t His sisters here with us?” So, he offended them. (Mark 6:2-3 HCSB)

It is an occupation he held from his teen until he started his ministry.
