What does the Bible say about dating and relationships? Boyfriend and girlfriend as we know them today never existed in ancient Judea or the ancient world. Especially when Judea was under Roman rule and occupation, the girls were kept indoors and then closely watched. If a girl’s reputation was tarnished in any way, she was considered broken merchandise. Further, she was on the verge of being knocked out of the marriage market. The policy of raping girls and women by Roman soldiers in the lands they occupied was a form of terrorism. This caused not only injuries but also caused long-term consequences. The society was arranged in such a way that the couple did not spend time alone until the engagement.

The Bible was written in Roman times and reflects the spirit of this time and society. An example is that in the Bible women are described as inferior to men. They are not even considered owners of their own bodies. According to the Bible, a woman belongs to her husband (which is very similar to Roman law).

Before a woman was married, the responsibility for her fell into the hands of her father. The girl’s only purpose in life before marriage was to get married. This is still the norm in some not-so-well-to-do rural African communities. At that point, she had to take care of the housework and deliver the baby. Before she got married, it was her duty to study and prepare for these tasks.

What does the Bible say about dating and relationships, To be honest, no one was involved in a boyfriend/girlfriend kind of a relationship when the Bible was written. Most marriages are arranged through family ties. Yet there is much we can learn from the Bible about relationships and marriage.

Although the Bible is silent on the issue of dating, most Christian communities today acknowledge and some even encourage boyfriend/girlfriend relations with emphasis placed on the purpose of getting into one.

The purpose for getting into a boyfriend and girlfriend relationship therefore should have the possibility of marriage. Dating is not just about playing around and having fun. It is really just a waste of time you could waste looking for a partner. If you have to date, make sure you pick the right people. Above all, try not to spend time meeting people you know you will not be spending the rest of your life with. The real purpose of this meeting is mainly to see if you are suitable to spend your life together.

However, as a Christian, you have to treat your boyfriend or girlfriend in a certain way. First, he or she can be someone else’s husband or wife, not yours, so do not treat him or her as yours. The golden rule applies here: Do you want someone to take advantage of your man or woman just because they have met them before you? Treat your boyfriend or girlfriend the same way you would want the boyfriend or girlfriend of your future wife or husband to treat that future marriage spouse.

What does the Bible say about dating and relationships, the danger of boyfriends and relationships is the temptation to begin doing things that are only permitted to be done by married people – sex. Therefore, if you may, resist such relationships as admonished by the Bible in the book of 2 Timothy 2:22 which says: “Flee from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

Conclusion

Though the Bible does not say anything about boyfriend and girlfriend relationships, some Christian communities acknowledge and encourage them. However, there is a need to be careful so as not to start indulging in illicit activities which God prohibits.
