Therefore, the poor will always be around until the time Jesus Christ shall come back to take his own to heaven where equality is the order of the day – no one will have more or less than the other such that there will be no classification as “rich” or “poor”. James 2:5 (NIV) “Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?”

There are many reasons why a person becomes poor. Sometimes poverty is the result of foolish decisions according to the book of Proverbs 6:10-11 and sometimes it is not human fault as indicated by John 9:3. However, the latter scripture does not imply that God destines people but rather, he allows certain unfortunate circumstances to make himself known. Nevertheless, poverty does not take away humanity from the person experiencing it because regardless of one’s socioeconomic status, the image of God is still borne in them therefore, we need to be kind to them as the Bible in Proverbs 14:31. Matthew 5:3 is another passage of scripture that seemingly suggest the poor being rich. Though the verse does not explicitly and out rightly say that the poor are rich in the context of possessions. It seems to suggest that heaven awaits those that are poor in spirit, we can assume that people that are poor in spirit are equally as poor literally but, they are rich because the heavenly kingdom is massively rich, and it belongs to them.

Proverbs 2:9 says: “I know your affliction and poverty – yet you are rich!”. This verse entails that even if someone is poor and they seemingly have nothing, God does not view them as such for he sees rich people as poor. Therefore, it is another verse that talks of the poor being rich.
