Jesus and his disciples paid taxes in the city of Capernaum. “But, so we won’t offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and catch the first fish that comes up. What did Jesus say about money and when did Jesus talk about money

Jesus urges Christians to pay tax to the powers that be, “Therefore, give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21). Further, Caesar was an emperor of an oppressive regime. But his followers, then as they are today, were urged to show respect for government in things that did not violate our Christian call to be witnesses (see Acts 4:18-19 and Romans 13:1-8).

Supporting the needy

Jesus taught that we should use our financial resources to help the poor and needy through kindness. He said this in the parable of the Good Samaritan in the book of Lue 10:29-37. Verse 35 says “The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back, I will reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.”

Apart from the parable of the Good Samaritan, we find Jesus telling the rich young ruler who inquired about how he could inherit eternal life after having done all the requirements of the ten commandments in Luke 18:22 these words “You still lack one thing: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me” (HCSB).

As shown above, Jesus’ main concern is that money should be used to help those in need. He wants us to share our possessions with those who have less than us or nothing at all.

Use Your Money to Benefit Others

Jesus taught us to use our monies and influence to do good to people who find themselves in precarious situations for doing so, is the same as doing good to Jesus himself. This is according to Matthew 25:34-40 which says the following words:

Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me. ‘

“Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?’ “And the King will answer them, ‘I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me” (Matthew 25:34-40 HCSB).

Forgive Those Who Owe You and Cannot Pay Back

Jesus taught if multiple people owe you money, do not forgive only the one owing but all of them. This is according to Luke 7:41-43:

“A creditor had two debtors. One owed 500 denarii, and the other 50. Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “I suppose the one he forgave more.” “You have judged correctly,” He told him.

Conclusion

Finally, it is important to share with those that do not have by giving them food, clothes, and all other basic needs that they cannot acquire for themselves.
